News and Events

I'm just back from a fantastic trip to Alaska, where I spent two weeks in the Arctic on the Kokolik River, and one week in Denali National Park. The two weeks on the Kokolik were with my wife, Karen, and our friends Vicky Hoover and Jack Hession. Simply put, our expedition was in the most pristine landscape I've ever seen. For one hundred miles we saw no other people, heard no planes or jets, and were utterly alone. The vast beauty of that landscape is difficult to describe in words. We were lucky enough to see (and photograph) brown bears, musk ox, wolves, many birds and thousands of the Western Arctic Caribou herd on their annual migration. I've built a new Alaska Gallery where images from this trip can be seen.

Just after our return we received the awful news of the death of John Bachar. John was one of the best rock climbers in the world, specializing in free-soloing, where the climber uses no ropes or gear other than the shoes on his feet and gymnastic chalk. John lived his life with passion and commitment and our hearts go out to his family for this tragic loss.

Sam's devotion to wilderness preservation has taken another turn with his being selected to join the Board of Directors of the California Wilderness Coalition. Sam had been a business supporter of CWC for years, and is looking forward to working with other commited wilderness advocates.

Thanks for stopping by, and be sure to check back soon for a look at new images we'll be adding as the summer progresses!
